There is more than one type of cinnamon. It's generally understood that Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Verum) or True Cinnamon which is native to Sri Lanka, is the safest and most beneficial form of it. However, the most common form that is found for sale in stores as cinnamon powder spice or cinnamon sticks is Cassia Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Cassia / Cinnamomum Aromaticum), which is also known as Chinese Cinnamon.

This form of cinnamon has far larger amounts of a substance known as Coumarin in it which is known to be toxic if too much is ingested. And can cause liver damage and other problems. So for use as a heart healthy food, home remedy, herbal supplement or preventative medicine where you’ll be ingesting a lot of cinnamon, you should only use the Ceylon or True Cinnamon type.

Scientific studies have shown cinnamon to be beneficial for heart health. Both types of cinnamon have been studied, although the more common Cassia type has been studied somewhat more frequently. One study stated that cinnamon has the beneficial components, cinna-mal-dehyde, cinnamic acid, cinna-mate and poly-phenols such as Cinnamaldehyde / Cinnamic Acid / Cinnamate / Polyphenols. It also has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial and anti-cancer effects.

Another study found that cinnamon reduced fasting blood glucose in diabetics. Maintaining proper blood sugar levels is also important to your heart health.
