UC Irvine, the first public research university to launch an esports arena and student-athlete sports scholarships, is also leading the academic research on the impact of esports at the middle school, high school and college level. Constance Steinkuehler Squire researches cognitive and social aspects of video games and gaming. She is also leading the development of middle and high school esports curriculum with support funding from the Samueli and Emerald Foundations led by Gerald Solomon and Joe Besecker. This esteemed panel will discuss the revolutionary possibilities for K12 esports to democratize gaming bringing women and people of color equal access, instilling core values of equity AND changing the paradyme of STEM learning with strong outcomes and engaged students.
