The media noted an increased presence in Miss World contestants from the African continent. Rosemary Salmon, the entrant from Uganda said participation was a "good idea" as it could bring "needed publicity" to the countries.

Among the African nations represented were Gambia (Janie Jack), Ghana (Araba Martha Vroon), Tanzania (Theresa Shayo), Kenya (Zipporah Mbugua), Uganda (Rosemary Salmon), Nigeria (Roseline Balogun), Tunisia (Rekeja Dekhil) and Morocco (Naima Benjelloun).
