So I found that the Moly can also spawn up in area 7 by the fishing spot, as well as disproved the claim that many guides insist large monsters will prevent them from spawning or scare them away. They duck their heads down, but can still be caught after the monster leaves. As well, despite what guides say, your Palico or Lynian friends do not scare them away either. Just thought I'd upload this to counter the stupid amount of misinformation. UPDATE: After finding the Rocky Moly in the desert area finally, I have new things to say. One, it seems an area has to be level 5 for the special molies to spawn, or at least at a rate that isn't stupidly low. Two, it seems your Palico may scare away Moly groups if there's a rare one (but not the regular ones, like I mentioned before), as there was at least two occasions when I approached them with my ghillie mantle on with nothing around to scare it (like a large monster) and they were scurrying away before I even got there. So if you're specifically hunting for the rare ones, leave your little pal at camp.
