UC Health investigating email phishing incident that may have involved patient information

UC Health investigating email phishing incident that may have involved patient information CINCINNATI (WKRC) - UC Health is investigating after an email phishing incident may have impacted patient information.

UC Health said they learned of the phishing attack on July 6. It said the attack led to unauthorized access to some UC Health employee email accounts between July 6-12, but it's not been able to determine if the person responsible did view any of the employees' emails or attachments.

UC Health said it's reviewing those emails and attachments to identify patients who may have been affected. There may be patient information in those emails, including names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and clinical information.

The health organization released a statement Wednesday that reads, in part, "UC Health takes the privacy and confidentiality of its patients' information very seriously, and deeply regrets any inconvenience or concern this incident may cause its patients. To help prevent something like this from happening again, UC Health is enhancing its email security and reinforcing education with employees on how to identify and avoid malicious emails."

Affected patients will be notified in the coming weeks as the investigation continues, but UC Health says there's no indication patient information has been misused. If you have any concerns, UC Health has set up a call center for patients at 1-833-496-0187.

In addition, UC Health says patients should review any statements they receive and notify providers if there are services on there they did not receive.
