Pictures and video on social media show large numbers of officers attending on the Exchange Square side of the shopping centre. Senior police sources confirmed to the MEN that "several" people had been stabbed. It is not known at this stage if the attacks has resulted in any fatalities.
Emergency services say four people have been injured in the incident, sources say more than one person has been stabbed.
One video, recorded outside the shopping mall on Church Street, shows officers deploying a Taser and holding a man to the group.
