Police scuffle with protesters in Beirut

Police scuffle with protesters in Beirut (19 Nov 2019) Protesters clashed with police in central Beirut on Tuesday as demonstrators blocked roads in the Lebanese capital.

The police officers, some of who were women, could be seen scuffling with female demonstrators.

The protesters were trying to prevent lawmakers from reaching parliament and forced the postponement of a legislative session.

Demonstrators have raised questions about the constitutionality of the session in absence of a new government.

They were opposed to parliament voting on a controversial amnesty law.

Prime Minister Saad Hariri resigned from his government on October 29 in response to the protests, which erupted over proposed new taxes but have since snowballed into calls for the government to resign and for the entire political elite that has ruled Lebanon since the end of its 1975-90 civil war to step aside.
