Impeachment is the process by which a legislative body levels charges against
a government official. Impeachment does not in itself remove the official
definitively from office; thus it is essentially the statement of charges against
the official.
Whereas in some countries the individual is provisionally removed, in others
they can remain in the office during the trial.
Impeachment exists under constitutional law in many countries around the
world, including Brazil, France, India, Ireland, the Philippines, Russia, South
Korea, and the United States.
What happens next in the impeachment of President Trump?
President Trump entered the history books in a new category Wednesday: He is the third U.S. president to have been impeached by the House. The two Wednesday votes on impeachment bring to an end the House’s months-long inquiry into whether Trump improperly pressured Ukraine to conduct investigations that would benefit him politically.
