The power of collectively shared experience | Stephen Kamal | TEDxQUT Set against the backdrop of the Sudanese civil war in the Nuba Mountains, Sudan in 1994. This Personal and intimate story gives an insight into the life of a former child of war and refugee. Having found “life” in Australia Stephen attributes “The power of a collectively shared experiences” to helping him find a sense of belonging and long-lasting peace, and as such he is now living out his life to its full potential. Stephen Kamal moved to Australia in 2006 at the age of 16. Having lived in Uganda as a refugee for more than a decade after escaping the civil war in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains, today Stephen is a father, husband, and final-year Bachelor of Information Systems student at QUT. He is drawn to people and loves to use his knowledge and experience to enlighten, inspire, and motivate people while simultaneously having others question their own experiences, beliefs, doubts, and perceptions of refugees and migrants. Stephen hopes to open a youth not-for-profit organisation and orphanage to give back to the community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
