This is a very common question from runners! A popular opinion is that landing around the rearfoot (heel strike) leads to increased risk of injury; however, this is not the case.
Based on some research (Hamill et al. 2017), they have reviewed the literature and have shown that changing your foot landing to a midfoot or forefoot strike does NOT reduce risk of injury!
Now, how about the other popular opinion that only recreational runners heel strike, while elite runners do not?
That is also NOT true! Multiple research studies have shown that a majority of elite long distance runners adopt more of a rearfoot strike pattern!
Just because I said all of this, it does not mean I advocate everyone to heel strike. I do not believe one foot strike is better than the other as it all depends on the context of the runner and environment!
Rather, I believe there are more important things to think about in terms of injury prevention, like load management and recovery strategies, which I'll go over some other time!
