Female Participation In The Workplace Dips To An Alarming Low In India| Mathrubhumi News India is the 7th-largest economy in the world, with a GDP of $2.72 trillion. But a majority of our women are out of the workforce. The latest NSSO data on youth {15-29} shows that female participation has dropped from 37.01 per cent in 2004-05 and 24.4 per cent in 2011-12 to a paltry 16.4 per cent in 2017-18. Recent data from the World Bank too corroborates this, revealing only 24 per cent of women in the workforce. Our neighbours fare much better; Nepal {82 per cent}, Bangladesh {36 per cent}, Bhutan {58 per cent}, and Afghanistan {49 per cent}. Over the last decade an already low female labour force participation rate continues to dwindle. A report by Azim Premji University researchers led by Amit Basole said with the government not releasing results of the new high-frequency Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Sample Survey Office, they used data from the Consumer Pyramids Survey of the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy (CMIC-CPDX) to understand the employment situation between 2016 and 2018. It says that: “In general, women are much worse affected than men. They have higher unemployment rates as well as lower labour force participation rates“. These studies show that women are dropping out at all levels of age, education and income. Among the factors attributed to this alarming scenario are sexual assault and harassment at the workplace. Another reason is maternity leave. The new provision of 26 weeks, as against the earlier duration of three months has also proved to be a damper for women in the job market, when competing against males. Moreover, many also decide to quit and never return to the job after this period, which too counts against women in employment opportunities.
