Commons erupts as Bercow forced to take over from Deputy Speaker in election vote shambles

In the United Kingdom, outgoing House of Commons Speaker John Bercow was forced to take over from Dame Eleanor Laing, Deputy Speaker, as Independent Group for Change MP Chris Leslie put in a last-minute amendment.

Last night British MPs backed Boris Johnson’s early election bill by 438-20.

During the announcement of the results, Deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor Laing passed over to John Bercow as a last-minute amendment was raised by Chris Leslie.

The Deputy Speaker said: “I now have his amendment before me and I am reading his amendment.

Dame Laing then paused and bent down to read the amendment, before continuing: “Amendments are not suitable for discussion at this time. So, the question is that the Bill now be read a third time.
