Here in the GCC, government along with relevant organisations and authority are supporting the development of cities through various road infrastructure projects.
Most recently, Construction work on Bahrain’s Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway, which is valued at $4.5m (BHD1.7m) was completed under the directives of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister of Bahrain.
Work on the road project included adding a fourth lane from Salmabad to Tubli intersection, according to the kingdom’s minister of works, municipalities affairs, and urban planning, Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf.
Another road project in Bahrain that is significant for the kingdom’s main road network is the $62m (BHD23.4m) Shaikh Zayed Highway Development Project, construction on which began in August 2019.
According to the assistant undersecretary for roads at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs, and Urban Planning, Huda Abdulla Fakhro the project has been progressing as per the planned schedule.
Upon completion, the highway will have a capacity to accommodate 53,000 vehicles per day in two directions.
Recently, Oman’s Ministry of Transport also noted completion on the construction of the 191km-long Eastern Highway project that starts from Bidbid province passing through Wadi Al-Aqq to Al Kamil and Al Wafi.
The road project includes three traffic lanes in each direction with a speed not exceeding 120km per hour, in addition to 90m-high bridges, which extend over valley crossings. The project also comprises two tunnels, each of which are 2.1km-long and will feature three-laned two separate roads in each direction.
Meanwhile, in the UAE the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) wrapped up construction work on the roads leading to the Hamriyah Free Zone, with the project being carried out at a cost of $19m (AED70m).
SRTA said that the project was completed in 10 working months, and was carried out in line with its strategy to make Sharjah an industrial and commercial centre, with international infrastructure.
In another UAE road infrastructure project, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority also noted completion on the Al Qudra-Lehbab Roads Interchange Development Project.
The project covered construction of a flyover to ensure free flow of traffic in all directions on both Al Qudra and Lehbab roads, as well as a separate bridge for cyclists crossing over the Lehbab Road.
Additionally, the project included construction of two bridges on the collector road alongside the existing two bridges, in addition to building ramps for right and left turnings as well as U-turns.
The development of roads continue to support the increasing population in the GCC and meet the need to curb bottlenecks across cities.
